Architecture is a lethal undertaking that does not stand up to human and natural disasters and no one has endeavored to create architectural solutions to natural and man-made disaster forces. Every year, up to 300,000 people, world-wide, are burned, crushed, drowned, swept out to sea, or poisoned by the inadequacy of architectural structure, materials, and operating systems.
The manufacturing of architectural materials is highly energy and resource consuming and has a huge destructive footprint in its embedded energy for manufacturing, transportation, and extraction. The status quo desire “exotic” materials and this contributes to the continued destruction of the environment on many continents.
Every larger-scale building we construct creates tons of daily CO2 poisonous gases. Have you not wondered why the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning machinery of buildings are hidden on the roof or behind high walls safely out of site? Architecture is a sinister facade that hides the real and odious truth of destruction and our ignorance to this fact is propagated by universities and the architecture profession. We have been lied to. LEED is a lie. “Net zero” is a lie.
Does no architect have the inquisitiveness and the courage to state the facts and publish it to the world? The profession dupes the public to be enamored with style and appearance without consideration of substance and function. Profoundly questioning students are weeded-out by universities and architects further the lie for fear of ostracism and joblessness.
Thus, the world continues to be destroyed by this pernicious practice we call, architecture, and year by year, its pervasive footprint overtakes the natural world eradicating our last hope of comprehending nature’s secrets to live in mutual kinship with each other and the living world that sustains us. Greed, domination, and arrogance shall be our epitaph.
